AP Biology: Exam Strategy 4 – Identify Key Words

Every AP Biology topic contains important key words. You must learn these words and their meanings.  When you learn these words, group them by associating them with other words.

Example

Words associated with meiosis – synapsis, crossing-over, and tetrads

Words associated with mitosis – identical daughter cells and clone

Question: Which of the following illustrates cytokinesis during mitosis?

(A) Crossing-over

(B) Formation of the spindle

(C)  Formation of tetrads

(D) Synapsis

(E)  Division of cytoplasm

If you don’t know the answer, you can immediately eliminate A, C, and D using word associations. Then, you only have to choose from two answers. The correct answer is E.

Identify WRONG Questions

Although it is important to read every question carefully, it is particularly important to keep an eye out for questions with EXCEPT, NOT, and LEAST. With these questions, you are looking for the wrong or least correct answer. The best way to approach these questions is to eliminate the incorrect answers.

For example, if a question asks you to find the answer that is NOT TRUE, eliminate the answers that ARE TRUE.

Good luck on the AP Biology Exam!
